Miramichi River Report July 20th 2008

2008-07-20

On the South West Miramichi River for the lower stretches by Rodney Colford. The weather was warm the last few days making it very hard fishing on the lower stretches of the river. The water temps went very high for a couple days hitting the high 70’s. This morning the water was in the mid 60’s and the fish were very active. Winds were out of the East and the Barometric pressure was rising for the most part of the day. Looks like some cooler weather for a couple days and a chance of showers. High tide for the morning is 8:40 am at 1.43 meters high. The water temperature was back up to 74F before dark tonight. It should get down to fishable conditions in the mid 60’s over night.

Today the water cooled down and we got into a few fish at Wetherill pool in the Blissfield area. I landed a Grilse on a red butt green machine. Keith Gilks fishing the lower stretch at Edmonds landed a grilse. Laura Gilks landed a grilse across from Edmonds Pool. Mathew Hollingsworth landed a grilse at Edmonds Pool with a green Machine. And Yesterday he landed two Grilse at Edmonds and Peter Jones landed a grilse.

Down by the Mouth of Cains River they are starting to have some very good fishing with great amounts of huge salmon starting to hold up in the pools. There should soon be a report of a 30 pound plus salmon hooked. Flies of choice are green machines and bombers. Back in a couple days with another report.

Miramichi River Report July 14th 2008

July 14th 2008

River Report for the Miramichi River by Rodney Colford. With the water being in the mid to high 60’s and the barometric pressure staying steady. The fish are taking the fly. Last week our group of four landed 13 in high water conditions.

And again this week we saw several fish which are mostly grilse moving through our upper pools in the Blissfield area. Today we started seeing some huge salmon in the 20lb range. One massive salmon came for a bomber by the mouth of Cain’s that had to be close to 20 lbs. As for catches this morning we lost 3 grilse using a green machine white tail in the Blissfield area. Buggers would not stay hooked!

With the river dropping for the upper parts it’s starting to get very low. But for the water level on the lower section from the mouth of Cain’s to Quarryville we could use a bit lower levels to improve the condition.

Most of the fish I saw were very silver looking fish. Looks like there still pushing through the pools. So get out and hook up and tight lines from the banks of the Miramichi.

Miramichi River Report July 9th 2008

On the South West Miramichi River for the lower stretches by Rodney Colford. With the water dropping and the pools really starting to form it is making things a little easier for anglers to see the pools after such a big raise in water.

Miramichi River Report July 06th 2008

On the South West Miramichi River for the lower stretches by Rodney Colford. With the weather staying very good the past few days and the water dropping. It is making some very good fishing in most areas of the river.

The water temperature is in the 60's and the barometric pressure has been rising the past few days. There are loads of fish in the river and several amounts of grilse are being landed. The past couple days our group of sports have hooked 18 fish.

Other anglers on the river from Doaktown to Quarryville are hooking up. The flies of choice have been very many patterns, both dry and wet flies are working very well so don't be shy to try what ever salmon pattern you have in the box!

The water has cleared up and is almost to a perfect level again. Down by the mouth of Cain's River the water is still about 2 feet higher than normal conditions. But in the next couple days that should change.

For the Lower Stretches of the Miramichi River.

Miramichi River Report June 30th 2008

June 29th 2008

South West Miramichi River Report from Rodney Colford in Eastern Canada. The last couple days have been fair fishing on the lower stretches of the river. With heavy rain last night we are starting to see a rise in the water pretty much all day. At dark it was up about 6 to 8 inches and very dirty from the Cain’s River down. The upper parts of the river seemed to be staying clear from the mouth of Cain’s to Doaktown.

Over the last 2 days we have been hooking some fish mostly grilse.  Jon Peterson landed a grilse at Bown’s pool on a bomber, guided by Rob Strange. Bill Cary of South Portland landed a grilse and lost another yesterday on a glitter bear. Bill was guided by Perry Peterson. Local angler Dallas Hallihan landed a grilse at Hallihan’s Bar. I rolled several fish as well yesterday using bomber’s, but could not get them to take.

Today Bill Cary lost a grilse with guide Perry Peterson. Jason O’Brien of St. John landed a grilse this morning on a green machine and lost 3 more at Edmond’s pool with guide Rob Strange. Local angler Tyler Story landed a grilse at Edmond`s as well this evening. Guide Gary Colford landed a grilse tonight at the Swett Pool and his client landed a grilse as well, they also lost a salmon and landed a Shad. Local angler Glen Keenan landed a 15lb salmon at the Bar at the Mouth of Cain`s river.

The weather today was heavy rain all day! I expect the water to be up over a foot for sure if not 3!!! The water temperature was at 59 F and the barometric pressure was dropping tonight.

Prior to doing this report the water is up 3 feet and still rising. I expect it to be 3 to 4 days before it gets good again.

All for today I will try and be back tomorrow night.

Tight Lines,

Rodney Colford

South West Miramichi River report from Rodney Colford. For the lower stretches of the river from Doaktown to Blackville on the Miramichi. The river temperature was at 63F this evening. The water was still clear and rising some. The winds were out of the NE and the baometric pressure was holding steady.

There is still lots of fish in the river for the late days of June. With the great water heights we have is very good for the fish for getting up stream. And also very good for the pools on the upper parts of the river. Most of our pools on the lower stretches have been very high for the most parts of the month.

Some reports of fish being hooked are as follows: Ian Robertson of Fredericton landed a grilse, lost a monster salmon and rolled a couple more on a green butt bear hair. Larry Vanperson landed a nice salmon about 18lbs this evening on a bomber in the Upper Blackville area.

Back tomorrow night with a report for tomorrows fishing conditions from the lower stretches of the Main South West Miramichi River.

June 24th 2008

South West Miramichi River Report by Guide Rodney Colford. On the lower stretches of the river from Doaktown to Quarryville. Most anglers are reporting a good amount of fish up and down the river but most are reluctant to take a fly. (Maybe a intermediate sink tip line would help in this high water? But I do not recommend it when the water drops). We are having

South West Miramichi River Report on the lower stretches by Guide Rodney Colford. The winds are out of the East and the pressure is dropping on a Friday afternoon. The temperature is 23 Celsius and with the next 7 days from 16 C to 25 C and a few showers expected. There is a high tide in the morning at 8:15 am and is 1.54 meters high. The high tide on the 22nd is at 8:48am and is 1.50 meters high.

With the river rising a couple feet over night on Thursday the Main South West Miramichi it’s made it a little tuff to wade in some pools. But the water stayed very clear and some guys are still hooking up.  The water temperature is in the mid to low 60’s. Thursday while the water was rising I landed a grilse at the Edmond Pool and Mike McLaughlin lost a grilse. Allison Arbeau landed a 15lb salmon on a Shady Lady pattern at the bridge pool. Yesterday Pat Colford landed about a 15 lb salmon at pool 66. Brian Fox of Woodstock landed a 45 incher on the North West Miramichi. Way to go Brian!!

The river started dropping last night but again with heavy showers up river we may see a rise again. While out on the river this morning for a short while I saw several fish jumping and seemed to be moving through. Also there was a canoe lost in the high water last night, if someone finds or see’s this canoe on the lower stretches of the SW Miramichi give me a call. It belongs to Don Roy and it is a 20ft Old Town canoe.

Rodney Colford
